Ewy is a punk solo project based in Leeds. Their latest EP ‘SCREAM LIKE A DOG’ is out September 6th now! Listen here!
The project formed in 2018 out of frustration due to lack of connections to other musicians with similar tastes (turns out folk-punks are hard to find in rural North Yorkshire). Armed with a shitty laptop they borrowed from their brother, an SM58, Audacity and a Behringer audio interface ‘a compilation of songs i wrote late at night’ was released on Bandcamp on October 29th 2018 to absolutely no critical acclaim aside from some friends at high school who thought ‘it was alright’.
Ewy has gone onto publish 10 more DIY releases, most of them going unnoticed until Ewy joined TikTok in 2021. There, ‘Jewellery and Teeth’ was boosted to 100,000 streams. Later that year, ‘drip drip drip fall’ released and was the first song to reach one million streams. In 2022, ‘woollen mittens’ was used by over 2000 people as a sound on TikTok before its release. The song detailed Ewy’s trans experience and gained half a million streams in under 6 months. Queer Music UK wrote “The heart of their music is a beautiful and often ethereal folk styling that gives their songs an almost haunting quality especially given the often heavy subject matters of their work”.
